When to Use This Guide
This page is designed to help you resolve any issues or questions you may have about using hyperlinks in your designs. Whether you're adding, troubleshooting, or trying to understand the limitations, this guide covers all essential details.
Understanding Hyperlinks
A hyperlink allows you to click on an element in your design and be directed to another page or action. This can include opening a web address, sending an email, or even calling a telephone number. Hyperlinks enhance the interactivity of your designs.
When and Where Hyperlinks Work
- **On Downloaded PDF Files**: Hyperlinks work effectively when shared via email or messaging platforms but are not supported in flattened PDF versions.
- **In Presentation Mode**: Hyperlinks function normally, enabling navigation to external content.
- **View-Only Designs**: Hyperlinks are active in designs shared with view-only access.
- **Designs Shared as Websites**: Hyperlinks maintain their interactivity when designs are shared as websites.
- **Embedded Designs**: When embedded on external sites, hyperlinks open a new tab.
Setting Up Hyperlinks
To add hyperlinks to your design elements or text boxes, follow these steps:
- Select the element or text box you want to hyperlink.
- Click the 'More' icon on the toolbar.
- Choose the 'Link' icon, enter the desired URL, and press 'Enter.'
- For linking to different pages within your design or recent designs, select the respective option from the dropdown menu.
Hyperlink Limitations
- **Not Supported**: PNGs, JPGs, and flattened PDFs do not support hyperlinks.
- **Grouping Elements**: It's necessary to hyperlink individual elements before grouping; group hyperlinks have been deprecated due to potential confusion.
- **Transparent Elements**: Hyperlinks won't function if the transparency is set to 0%; consider adjusting transparency levels between 1-99%.
- **Video Content**: Hyperlinks can't be added to videos or elements layered over videos within Canva.
- **Text Effects**: Certain effects like Lift and Neon may disrupt hyperlink functionality; refer to specific workarounds if needed.
Additional Details
Hyperlinks within the same domain open in the same tab, while those from external websites open in a new tab.
